Filling in the blanks: Kyle Weiland

Weiland, the Notre Dame closer, had an up-and-down year in 2008. He had seven saves and struck out more than a batter per inning, but he also had a 5.04 ERA and gave up over a hit per inning. That being said, there has been some interest in the right-hander. Here's a brief run-down:

With a projectable, wiry type body that should fill out as he matures, Weiland has an intriguing three-pitch mix. His fastball's got serious sink and gets cranked up to 91-94 mph. It's a strikeout pitch and also generates plenty of ground balls. His slider can be a plus pitch, but gets slurvy at times. He doesn't use the changeup much, but it has the chance to be an average offering. Many teams think he has the stuff and delivery to start and he could be used in that role once he is drafted.
